How Do Water Well Pumps Work?
Understanding how a water well system works can help you troubleshoot problems if they arise and will help you communicate with us better once we arrive and fix the problem. The water pump’s job is to push or lift water below the ground into your home. Submersible pumps are placed within the well while jet pumps are located above ground. Submersible pumps know when to pump water when the pressure within the home’s water system drops below a certain level.
This pressure is controlled by the pressure tank. When water is pumped from the well into the pressure tank, the water compresses the air inside the tank until it reaches a certain level. This air pressure is what forces the water throughout your plumbing system. When you open your faucet, this pressure drops. Once it drops a certain level, then the water pump turns on and builds pressure. The size of your pressure tank will depend on the yield of your well and the average amount of water you use for your home.
